Embedded Linux with long-term maintenance support

  • Q. Why the name Geckito?

    A. Coming from the openSUSE project we like wild animals. A Geckito is a smaller relative of our mascot and we aim for smaller devices here.

  • Q. Is Geckito a Linux distribution?

    A. No, we are not a distribution on our own. We work together with distributions to fill the needs.

  • Q. Which Linux distributions can be used with Geckito?

    A. We focus on SUSE based distributions like openSUSE Tumbleweed or Leap.

  • Q. Is the project limited to SUSE distributions?

    A. Our build tooling is as agnostic as possible. You can build for most rpm, debian or Arch Linux based distributions. However our templates are currently focused on SUSE distributions.

  • Q. Which architectures are supported?

    A. Our initial targets are x86_64 and aarch64. However, we like to add arm 32bit and RISC-V64 architectures at least.

  • Q. Are there any license restrictions?

    A. We do only accept software with OSI approved licenses.

  • Q. Do I need a SUSE distribution to use Geckito?

    A. No, any Linux distribution should work.

  • Q. Can I use MS Windows as development environment?

    A. Yes, via the provided WSL container.

  • Q. Can I use MacOS as development environment?

    A. No, at least not at the moment.

  • Q. What are supported hardware devices?

    A. We focus on Raspberry Pi 4 during the initial start of the project.

  • Q. What hardware is to be supported in general?

    A. Any hardware running a Linux kernel. This excludes very low-end hardware like Arduino.
